A 2D Echo, or echocardiogram, uses ultrasound to create moving images of the heart. Unlike an ECG, which records electrical activity, a 2D Echo lets the cardiologist actually see the heart's chambers, valves and pumping motion.
This test can help assess how well the heart is pumping blood, whether the heart's chambers are of a normal size, and whether the valves are opening and closing properly. It can also help detect fluid around the heart or certain congenital heart concerns.
A 2D Echo may be recommended for breathlessness, swelling, a heart murmur heard during examination, high blood pressure, or as a follow-up after cardiac treatment. Specialised versions, such as a Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram, may be advised in specific clinical situations.
The test is painless and does not involve radiation, which makes it a useful and repeatable tool for cardiologists to track heart health over time.
