Stress Test / TMT: What Patients Should Know

7 August 2026

A stress test, often called a TMT or treadmill test, looks at how the heart responds when it is working harder than usual. Since some heart conditions only show up during physical exertion, this test can reveal things a resting ECG may not.

During the test, you walk on a treadmill at a gradually increasing pace while your heart rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms are monitored. The cardiologist watches for any changes that suggest the heart is not getting enough blood flow during exercise.

A stress test may be considered for exercise-related chest discomfort, breathlessness during activity, or as part of assessing overall cardiac risk. It is also sometimes used as a follow-up after cardiac treatment.

This test is not suitable for everyone. Your cardiologist will review your symptoms, medical history and any existing heart conditions before deciding whether a stress test is appropriate for you.
